Classic album retrospective 1- Napalm Death-Scum

Hello there well i know its been a few days but ive been trying to think of what to write about in my first proper post(not counting my introduction). Well as i said one of the things i will be writing about in my blog will be retrospectives on classic albums which will at the moment be mostly metal. So for my first i have decided to write about the genre -defining "Scum" album from the grindcore pioneers Napalm Death. Enjoy... Without Napalm Deaths "Scum" extreme metal as we know would probabaly not exist. This album - which features two different lineups on each side-defined grindcore with the growled vocals, Discharge-influenced riffing and of course, the blastbeat drumming. Inspired by anarcho punk and death metal, it would inspire countless bands and lead to careers of several of the musicians who played on it with bands such as Godflesh,Carcass and Cathedral. Formed in 1981 by two young punks called Nick Bullen and Miles Ratlidge,Napalm Death began as an anarcho band inspired by Crass, whose compilation album "Bullshit Detector volume 3" landed them their first recording. After that guitarist Justin Broadrick joined and they started to become more influenced by extreme metal. Broadrick came from an industrial background and later go on to form Godflesh and more recently, Jesu. Ratlidge then left and was replaced by Mick Harris and this lineup recorded the A side of "Scum". Harris was the only member to play on the whole album. After Bullen and Broadrick left they were replaced by Jim Whitely on bass, future Cathedral frontman Lee Dorrian on vocals and Carcass guitarist Bill Steer. This left no original memebers by this point. After releasing the album they were supported by legendary Radio 1 DJ John Peel. The album also had a recorded breaking track with the song "You Suffer" which clocks in at just 1 second long, this also lead to tv appearences and a cover story on the NME. The bands lyrics made them recognised as one of the most political bands in the extreme metal genre. However, after the Scum tour Whitely would leave the band and would be replaced by Shane Embury. Eventally all the members who played on "Scum" would leave with Embury being the longest serving memeber to this day.
